In this section, you will find resources to assist with understanding the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) tiers of evidence and sources for locating evidence-based strategies and programs that meet the identified needs for specific settings and populations. Guidance is also provided to assist with the implementation of evidence-based interventions.

What Works Clearinghouse

The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) reviews the existing research on different programs, products, practices, and policies in education and provides educators with the information they need to make evidence-based decisions.

Using the WWC to Identify ESSA Evidence Ratings

Professional Learning Library

The Professional Learning Library is available free for educators working in South Carolina School Districts, through the Learning Tab at SCLead.org. The course search feature can be used to find courses directly tied to the South Carolina Teaching Standards, PADEPP Leadership Standards and other topics.

Colorado Department of Education’s Initiative Inventory Alignment and Analysis Process Guide

The purpose of this document is to support developing, completing, and analyzing an initiative inventory. An initiative inventory is a tool to support teams in “taking stock” of current initiatives/programs that are being implemented and identifying potential areas of alignment between them. The initiative inventory tool is used during the Exploration stage when states are identifying possible new programs to implement. It can also be used at other stages of implementation when a state is trying to align existing programs.

Evidence-Based Improvement: A Guide for States to Strengthen Their Frameworks and Support Aligned to the Evidence Requirements of ESSA

One of the broad intents of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is to encourage evidence-based decision-making as standard practice. This guide provides an initial set of tools to help states and school districts understand and plan for implementing evidence-based improvement strategies.

SC LETRS Professional Development

The South Carolina Department of Education is partnering with Lexia to offer eligible educators access to Lexia’s LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) suite of professional learning programs designed to provide a deep knowledge of literacy and language expertise in the science of reading. LETRS teaches the skills needed to master the foundational and fundamentals of reading and writing instruction – phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written language.
